How to Choose the Right Waterproof Flooring: Laminate vs. Vinyl

If you’ve spent any time in a Wisconsin winter, you know what a mess snow, slush , and mud can make of a floor. Boots tracking in snow from the driveway or bar, kids coming and going in and out, or even a basement that sees a little seepage - these are real-life challenges that make waterproof flooring a smart choice.

But when it comes to DIY projects, many people get stuck deciding between waterproof laminate flooring and waterproof vinyl flooring. Both have their perks, and picking the right one can save you time, money, energy and frustration.

Waterproof Laminate Flooring

Pros:

  • Looks like real wood: Gives a warm, classic feel to kitchens, living rooms, and finished basements.

  • Durable for indoor wear: Scratches and dents are usually minimal if you choose a high-quality plank.

  • DIY Friendly Click-Lock Install: Most planks snap together without glue.

  • Great for spaces where you want a real wood look but still need protection from the occasional winter puddle or basement dampness.

Things to Consider:

  • Must have a flat subfloor to avoid uneven spots showing through.

  • Not ideal for areas that stay wet constantly like a laundry room prone to leaks.

  • Needs underlayment or an attached pad to maximize comfort and soundproofing.

Waterproof Vinyl Flooring

Pros:

  • Truly water proof: Can handle spills, melting snow, and wet boots better than most laminates.

  • Flexible installation: Can be glued down, floated, or even in some cases peel-and-stick. Most are click-lock install with the pad already attached.

  • Variety of looks: Wood, stone, and tile patterns without the upkeep or installation demands.

  • Often come in 12 mil. wear layer (standard residential) and 20 mil. wear layer (light/medium commercial) to provide a durable surface.

Things to Consider:

  • Can feel softer or “spongier” underfoot compared to laminate.

  • Certain styles may dent if you drop heavy tools or equipment on them.
