New Year, New Projects: Start 2026 Strong Without Overspending

Around here, January is a quieter month. The holidays are over, the snow’s settled in, and folks finally have a little breathing room to look around the house or shop and say, “Yeah… that could use fixing.”

If you’re the kind of person who likes to do things yourself - and do them right - January is actually one of the best times of the year to plan your projects and save some money along the way.

You Don’t Need Fancy - You Need Solid

Most DIYers we talk to aren’t looking for top of the line or brand new for the sake of it. You want materials that are priced fairly, solid, dependable and still look good!

That’s where we come in (oh and our discount building materials).

A lot of what we sell changes and varies. We sell items purchased directly from material wholesalers, lumber yards, and anyone else who need to sell their items at a discount price. We purchase discontinued and overrun building materials to sell to you at a low price. We offer several different “grades” including top quality, good or imperfect, and some lesser quality products as well. We are up-front about the quality of the product and the materials are priced accordingly. Often it is best to stop on by the store and get a feel for what it is you’re looking for!

January Is a Smart Time to Buy

Here’s something folks sometimes don’t realize: materials are often easier to get - and cheaper - this time of year. Come spring, everyone’s fixing decks, adding sheds, finishing basements, and repairing winter damage. Prices go up. Inventory moves fast. Something to think about is we are here year round but in the winter you often have time to look things over more in depth, ask questions without feeling rushed, and pickup materials before the demand spikes. Even if you’re not starting that project tomorrow, buying now can save you a bit later.

Projects That Make Sense This Time of Year

You don’t need a full remodel to make progress. Winter is great for many projects including finishing your basement, frame or even insulation garages, building shelves & workbenches, replacing or finally getting to that darn window trim. All projects where discount lumber, insulation, doors or fasteners can do the job are just fine. And if you’re working nights or weekends, in between chores, that slower pace actually works well in your favor (most of the time).

Ask Questions - That’s What We Are Here For

While we aren’t master builders, most of us have can help with your questions, help you find a resource to answer your question, or even hand you a business card to some of our local wonderful contractors. We know not everyone grew up swinging a hammer, installing insulation or putting down a new floor. Some folks did, some learned as they went, and some are still learning. That’s all good! If you’re not sure how much material you need, if we don’t have what you need what other options we may have for you, how to even store materials in cold weather, we’re here to help! Just ask. No pressure, no upselling, no talking over your head. We’re laid back, but want to be helpful! That is who we are, and the beauty of our small towns.

A Little Planning Goes A Long Way

Before you head out; give us a call, check our Facebook page, check out our website, email us, whatever works for you. We have tons of inventory but we don’t have everything all the time. We’re happy to check and let you know what we do have before you make that trip. There are only 5 employees at each of our stores so we know what we have, and when we’re not sure if its exact we will physically check for you!

So here’s to a new year! Doesn’t have to mean big, expensive changes, sometimes it just means fixing what’s been bugging you, making your space work better for you, and always remember we’re here to help! Never be worried about asking us! We are here Monday - Friday 8am until 5pm & Saturday 8am until 2pm (we’re closed on Sundays & holidays). That’s how we’ve always done it - and how we’ll keep doing it!
